2019 has been a very busy year for anime on Netflix. One of Netflix’s latest additions is the reboot of the beloved Saint Seiya franchise. But when are the remaining episodes of the first season coming? And, has Netflix renewed Knights of the Zodiac: Saint Seiya for a second season? Let’s find out!

Knights of the Zodiac: Saint Seiya is a Netflix Original anime based on the manga series of the same name by Masami Kurumada. The Saint Seiya franchise has been one of the most influential anime of the past few decades. Amassing billions in revenue since it’s inception, the series has gone on to spawn numerous spin-offs and has one of the most colorful rosters ever assembled in an anime. The Netflix adaptation hasn’t been shy of criticism, even before it was released fans were disappointed to learn that the character of Andromeda Shun had been switched from Male to Female.

The story follows an orphan, Seiya, as he is forced to go to a sanctuary in Greece to obtain the Bronze Cloth of the Pegasus constellation. The cloth is, in fact, a protective armor worn by the Greek goddess Athena and her 88 warriors known as Saints. Seiya soon becomes the Pegasus Saint and goes on a quest to search for his missing sister.

Until Netflix releases the remaining six episodes we won’t know if a second season will be coming. With so much source material to play with, there’s certainly more than enough to choose from to create more seasons.

Typically Netflix would categorize the first half of a season as ‘part one’ but as Netflix has listed the first set of episodes as season one, this has left some confused. Us included. The chances are Netflix will just release the remaining episodes and categorize them as season one instead of season two.

Whether or not Netflix orders more episodes is yet to be confirmed. Renewal will be defined by viewership and critical acclaim so once all of the episodes of the first season have aired, we’ll have a good understanding on the future of Knights of the Zodiac.

Has the series been well received by subscribers and critics?

The series certainly does have its own fanbase but the general consensus is not positive. At the time of writing the anime is sitting at 4.7/10 on IDMb. Reviews haven’t been too kind either with The Review Geek giving the series a 3.5/10.

Much of the criticism has been heavily aimed at the animation of the show. Fans of the franchise absolutely adore the original anime style used but the latest iteration of highly glossed CGI has been turning fans off.

Knights of the Zodiac: Saint Seiya Season 2 Release Date

As we’ve stated above it’s unclear how Netflix will be defining the next six episodes. The missing episodes are expected to release later this year but how Netflix will define them is still a mystery. Logically it would be better for Netflix to acknowledge these episodes as the second half of the first season.

You won’t be able to watch episodes anywhere other than Netflix. Unlike some anime series, this iteration of Knights of the Zodiac is exclusive to Netflix and aren’t airing episodes on regional television networks in Japan.

Release date in the Fall is likeliest. We’d be very surprised to see the series pushed back as far as Winter.

If Netflix renews the series for another string of twelve episodes we wouldn’t expect to see that season release until late 2020 or early 2021.
